Las Vegas Valley Geology:
For millions of years a great inland sea covered Southern Nevada and then receded, revealing fire-colored oxidized minerals embedded in gray limestone along with blood-red sandstone.
In a cataclysmic event known as a fault thrust 65 million years ago, two crustal plates collided with such force that one was shoved over the other. This created the rugged outcroppings of red sandstone and gray limestone seen in many areas of Clark County.

The discovery of precious metals in the late 19th century lead to the beginning of mining in the Valley.

In 1905 the mail railway linking southern California with Salt Lake City was completed. This is the same year that Las Vegas was founded as a city. When Las Vegas was incorporated and adopted its first charter in 1911, the population was approximately 800.
In 1931 gambling was legalized in the State of Nevada and Las Vegas issued six gambling licenses. Also begun in 1931, the construction of the Hoover Dam resulted in a population boom which helped alleviate the effects of the Great Depression.
