Work force housing issues and their effect on the local economy will be discussed at Preview Las Vegas, an economic outlook forum scheduled for 7 a.m. Thursday at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Charles Siemon, a land-use attorney and work force housing expert from Boca Raton, Fla., will give case histories of how other communities have addressed affordable housing.

Las Vegas housing prices continue to increase. The median new-home price was $309,990 at year's end, up 6.8 percent from a year earlier, Home Builders Research reported. The median price was skewed by some 7,700 apartment conversions, which have a median price of $185,000.

With the median household income stable at $47,100, some average wage earners are finding it difficult to find a home they can afford. Business owners have cited the rise in home prices as a major challenge in recruiting workers to Las Vegas.

Resolving work force housing issues requires a conscious, deliberate effort to change politics, development and traditional thinking about land use, Siemon said.

James Burkhard, senior director of global market oil research for Cambridge Energy Research Associates, will also speak at Preview Las Vegas. He'll discuss the global energy market and its effect on business and lifestyle.

Other Preview Las Vegas speakers are Rossi Ralenkotter, president and chief executive officer of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority; Keith Schwer, director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at University of Nevada, Las Vegas; and Richard Lee, public relations director for First American Title Co. of Nevada.

The Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce and Nevada Development Authority are sponsoring the economic forecast. Tickets are $60 in advance for members of the organizations and $80 for nonmembers and at the door.
