North Las Vegas Housing Authority withdraws rezoning application Jan. 19, 2006 The rezoning would have hastened the sale of land on which the authority's failed Desert Mesa project was to be built. The planned 123-home low-income residential development at Carey Avenue and Commerce Street was stymied by construction delays, soil problems and lawsuits from contractors. The project led the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to classify the authority as a "troubled" agency. The authority wanted to rezone the 28-acre site to make it more attractive to buyer Joshi & Associates, who planned to build duplexes there. The authority had asked the council to rezone the land from light industrial and low-density residential to medium-density residential so the developer could build a 226-unit residential development on the property. Joshi & Associates' development would not be for low-income residents, officials said. Wednesday was the second time the rezoning application was to be considered by the council. The item had been postponed from the Jan. 4 council meeting after several neighbors showed up to protest rezoning because of worries about traffic, increased crime and other problems. Mayor Michael Montandon, who also serves on the housing authority board along with three other council members, said Wednesday that the authority had withdrawn the application so it would have "the chance to continue working" on a possible compromise with neighbors and the developer. |
